Determination of blood gases for starting oxygen therapy
Date added: 21 04 2023
In MFD Outpatient hospital "Iļguciems", Buļļu street 9, Riga, the examination "Determination of blood gases for starting oxygen therapy" is available.
A blood gas examination is necessary to receive an opinion on the need for long-term oxygen therapy in chronic patients.
If oxygen is poorly dissolved in the blood, it can cause hypoxia (a condition that develops when the tissues of the body are not supplied with enough oxygen)
The most sensitive to hypoxia is the human brain. Mental function in a healthy person may be impaired if SpO2* suddenly drops to <80%.
The family doctor performs the necessary initial examinations, including pulse oximetry (SpO2*), and issues a referral to a doctor - pulmonologist or cardiologist.
! Blood gas analysis is performed twice at least three weeks apart.
! With a referral from a pulmonologist or cardiologist, this examination is free of charge.
____________
* SpO2 - blood oxygen saturation
