PREVENTIVE PROGRAMS

The state-organised and paid early detection programme for breast, cervical and colorectal malignancies was launched in 2009. One of the main goals of the program is to reduce mortality caused by cancer. According to the current indicators, breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in Latvia, which, if detected in time, can lead to a complete cure. In cases of diagnosed disease, treatment can improve the quality of life.

Preventive examinations and timely treatment are essential to protect yourself from disease or early diagnosis!

In 2013, cancer timely detection programs will continue, in which patients are invited to perform a state-paid prevention of rectum and cervical cancer!

Preventive examination of intestinal cancer (screening) (with a referral from a family doctor)

  • Prophylactic examinations of the rectum for men and women from 50 to 74 years of age, once a year, with a referral from a family doctor.
  • Prophylactic examination includes a blood test for faeces (from three consecutive abdominal exits) performed once a year as a screening test for bowel cancer.
  • To perform a preventive examination, the patient should consult with their family doctor for a referral to a medical laboratory.

Cervical examination (screening)

The program includes:

  • Preventive testing for cervical cancer in women aged 25-70: once every three years, receiving an invitation letter
  • It is necessary to refer to a doctor, a gynecologist, for preventive testing.

Preventive programs for pregnant women

  • Pregnant women are paid for the following laboratory examinations from the state budget - for example, a complete blood count, urine tests, infectious diseases, detection of ferritin, cytological examinations, etc.
  • In order to become a participant of the prevention program, it is necessary to consult a gynecologist and register the pregnancy.
