Neurography and electromyography at the "Pārdaugava" Outpatient hospital

Date added: 06 01 2023

MFD Outpatient hospital centre "Pārdaugava" offers its customers neurography and electromyography examinations, which are used to assess the health of muscles and nerves.

  • Neurography tests nerve function by stimulating the nerve with a weak electrical impulse and recording the potential with surface electrodes at specific locations. The diagnosis takes into account the speed of electrical conduction of the nerve, as well as the shape and amplitude of the recorded potential.
  • Myography tests the electrical activity of muscle fibres by inserting a fine needle-electrode into the muscle and recording the potentials both in a relaxed muscle and during its mild contraction. The diagnostics consider potential audiovisual parameters (sound, shape, dimensions), provocative moments, etc.

This procedure does not require special preparation!

When to attend this procedure:

  • if there are complaints of permanent or temporary numbness, cramps or pain in the arms and/or legs;
  • muscle weakness or pain in the muscles;
  • unexplained sweating or chills;
  • polyneuropathy after radiotherapy;
  • objects often fall out of hands;
  • if you have diabetes or Lyme disease;
  • in cases of various symptoms after contracting the COVID-19 disease.

Both methods are combined if necessary; this need is justified by suspected diagnosis or the results obtained during the examination.

Neurography and electromyography are used in the diagnosis of the following diseases:

  • compression neuropathies – carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, Guyon tunnel syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, etc.;
  • in the diagnosis of polyneuropathy – diabetic polyneuropathy, dysmetabolic polyneuropathy, inflammatory polyneuropathy or polyradiculoneuritis, etc.;
  • nerve plexus damage - shoulder plexus damage, belt, cruciate plexus damage, etc.;
  • neuromuscular transmission disorders - myasthenia and myasthenic syndromes;
  • in the diagnosis of muscle diseases – muscular dystrophy, muscle damage caused by inflammation, changes in muscle tone – myotonia c.;
  • for the diagnosis of damage to the motor nuclei of the anterior horn of the spinal cord - motor neuron disease and syndromes, myelopathy, etc.;
  • in the diagnosis of nerve root damage, if the clinical and radiological findings do not match, etc.

The examination lasts from 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the question to be clarified.

Using skin creams on the day of the examination is not recommended. Body and skin temperature can affect the results of the examination, so it is advisable to keep your hands and feet warm, especially if the weather is cold outside.

IMPORTANT! If you have a pacemaker or any other electrical medical device, inform your doctor before the examination.
