MFD Outpatient hospital „Pardaugava” offers gastroscopy and video colonoscopy

February 9, 2012 - Now the check-up methods of the digestive system - fibrogastroscopy and video colonoscopy are available at the MFD Outpatient hospital „Pardaugava”, on Vienibas gatve 109, in Riga.

Everyone has ever experienced discomfort in the stomach. Many people try to cope with this problem on their own, but gastroenterologists advised to get consulted by the doctor, because such a seemingly minor issue may warn about serious diseases.

In case the gastroenterological doctor has a suspicion about any disease, there may help the following diagnostic methods.

Gastroscopy is an examination of the inside of the gullet, stomach and duodenum. It is performed by using a thin, flexible fibre-optic instrument that is passed through the mouth and allows the doctor to see whether there is any damage to the lining of the oesophagus (gullet) or stomach, and whether there are any ulcers in the stomach or duodenum. A biopsy (a small piece of the lining of the stomach) may be removed during an endoscopy and examined under a microscope in a laboratory to pinpoint an infection.

Video colonoscopy is the most precise endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube. It may provide a visual diagnosis (e.g. ulceration, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected lesions. Colonoscopy can remove polyps as small as one millimetre or less. Once polyps are removed, they can be studied with the aid of a microscope to determine if they are precancerous or not.

In order to provide qualitative and effective check-up, the modern endoscopic equipment Olympus is set up at the MFD Outpatient hospital “Pardaugava”. It allows receiving more precise results, requires less time to perform the examination, which is less uncomfortable for the patient.
